Chicago, IL is a major city in the state of Illinois located about 300 miles northwest of the state capitol Springfield, IL. As of the 2010 census 2.7 million people lived within the city limits.
The first known reference to “Chicago” as “Checagou” was by Robert de LaSalle around the 1670’s in a memoir. Henri Joutel, in his journal of 1688, noted that the wild garlic, called “chicagoua,” grew abundantly in the area. The 1780’s saw the arrival of Jean Baptiste Point du Sabl who is commonly known as the “Founder of Chicago.”
On August 12 1833, the “Town of Chicago” was organized with a population around 200. Just after six years it would grow to a population of over 4,000. The City of Chicago was incorporated on Saturday March 4 1837 and went on to become the fastest growing city in the world for several decades.

Shedd Aquarium/Merchandise Mart/Adler Planetarium all open in 1930. The first McDonald’s opens in Des Plaines 1955. Sears Tower construction completes 1973. Chicago Marathon begins 1977. Chicago’s first female mayor, Jane M. Byrne, takes office 1979. Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, Inc. in business in 1986, and the Chicago Bears win Super Bowl XX. The Chicago Bulls won their sixth NBA championship in eight years 1998. Millenium Park opens in 2004. Chicago White Sox win their first World Series in 88 years in 2005. US President-elect Barack Obama makes his victory speech in Grant Park 2008. Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup (2010 & 2013).
