Skokie, IL is a village in the state of Illinois located about 14 miles northwest of Chicago’s ‘loop’. As of the 2010 census 64,800 people called Skokie home.

Skokie (formerly the Niles Center) is named after a Potawatomi word for “marsh”.  Skokie has received national attention twice in the past for court cases decided by the United States Supreme Court; In the mid-1970s and in 2001.

In 2001, Skokie’s decision to use an isolated wetland as a solid waste disposal site resulted in a lawsuit. The case went to the United States Supreme Court, and resulted in an overturn of the federal migratory bird rule.
