Elgin, IL is a suburb of Chicago located about 35 miles northwest of the Chicago “loop”. As of the 2013 census 110,145 called Elgin home.

Both the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Black Hawk Indian War of 1832 led the Native Americans out of the area.  Soon thousands of soldiers marched through the Fox River valley during the war, leading to fertile soils and flowing springs.

In New York, James Gifford and his brother heard rumors of this ripe area and set off on a journey.  They looked for a site on the stagecoach route from Chicago to Galena, Illinois and they eventually settled on a spot along the Fox River.  In April 1835, they established Elgin, naming it after the Scottish tune.

Today, Elgin is one of a few Illinois cities to host a riverboat casino (admit much controversy), is home to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and two highly protected nature preserves.
