Crystal Lake, IL is a suburb of Chicago located about 45 miles northwest of the Chicago “loop”. As of the 2010 census 40,700 called Crystal Lake home.

Back in the 1800’s, there were to communities called Nunda and Crystal Lake. In the mid 1830’s, Ziba Beardsley had come to the shores of the lake and commented that the “waters were as clear as crystal”.  In 1836, the town became known as Crystal Ville, and was later changed to its current “Crystal Lake” between 1836 and 1840.  The villages of Crystal Lake and Nunda were both incorporated in 1874;  in 1908, the village of Nunda changed its name to North Crystal Lake. Years later several attempts were made to consolidate the two villages, and finally, the village of North Crystal Lake was annexed to the Village of Crystal Lake in 1914, and a consolidated city government was established.

Today, Crystal Lake is home to two high schools (central, south, and prairie ridge), a 140-acre park district, and is the largest city within McHenry County
